It took 6 tries to get this one converted, virtually flawlessly, and create the slideshow, at the end, but I think the final result was well worth the effort. Considering this was shot back in 2002, with affordable video cameras being somewhat soft and fuzzy (with the compound effect of also being shot with rather subdued lighting, mostly indoors, using as much natural outdoors sunlight that could make it indoors(!) as the only light source), I'm pretty happy with the way this video turned out. All in all, the boyz look simply stunning, and the file size was pleasingly trim, due to some new technology (see below).
I did a lot of research on this project, because I was interested in what one of the moderators had commented about this form of deinterlacing through conversion to 60fps, on a comment on an earlier video I had processed.
He had stated "What he's doing is the most simple deinterlacing of digital TV: double the lines of each field to build a frame from it and display each built frame. The result is no deinterlacing artefacts and no non-deinterlaced saw borders, but a loss of half the vertical resolution. There exist much more sophisticated deinterlacing approaches (e.g. motion adaptive) and algorithm (motion compensation), the good ones need quite a lot of calculating power or time. He should try other deinterlacing filters."
And this make me think... I wrote a reply comment that I'd "take the advice to heart, and look into it.", so I actually TRIED a filter that did, simply, what the moderator has stated (just build frames by doubling the field lines), and I immediately saw the negative results, of this simple process. It resulted in a zig-zag pattern on the edge of any diagonal object (like a cock at half mast lol).
So I went back to the deinterlacing filter I had been using, "Deinterlace Smooth 1.1" and started studying it closer, to understand what it was truly doing. And what I discovered is that it actually does a "history" calculation, field to field, and if the "history" shows that the video data is not really moving, then it passes TWO FIELD's worth of detail information (IE FULL RESOLUTION VIDEO) into this portion of the new frame. ONLY when there is movement, is that portion of the video frame sourced from the single field. Thus... it's intellegent deinterlacing, resulting in the best of two worlds; full original detail on what's stationary, and non-interlaced (single field) information for the moving arms, legs, butts, balls and cocks... you understand... lol HAPPY to understand THAT! ALL of the thresholds and intensities are adjustable, btw, but I found I couldn't really improve on the original settings that the filter author had chosen.
In addition to THAT(!!!) On a whim, I researched and located a new sharpening filter (M-Sharpen) that is a KILLER filter, for two reasons: Firstly, normal sharpening filters sharpen the entire video frame, which has the downside of ALSO enhancing whatever noise is present, which, frankly, LOOKS bad, and ALSO bloats the resulting file size of the finished video. NOT a happy combination! WELL! M-sharpen filter, as it turns out, was designed as an animation sharpening filter, but it turned out that it worked GREAT on normal video too! The method is that first the filter figures out WHAT is actually the edges of detail in the picture. This sensitivity is adjustable. Next, it creates a MASK of this detail (like a photoshop mask) that lets it ONLY adds detail (amount ajustable) to the masked video, and leaves the rest alone! Thus, ONLY the edges of things get sharpened, and the rest (including any picture noise) is left untouched. The final caveat to this filter's performance is that the increase to the bit rate, and thus, the resultant file size... in minimal! Two fucking cool for words...
This is actually one of those times where I can say the resultant video truely looks better than the original DVD, at one third the file size. Kudos to the geniuses (PHd's included!!) who wrote these brilliant VirtualDub filters.
The DVD Bonus slide show at the end, actually required searching for, downloading, and installing a keyboard macro program, then writing a little custom script that would control VirtualDub, and duplicate the single frame slides into a real 60fps slide show video. I processed these slides at the very highest resolution available, because, frankly, these are STUNNING pictures, for the most part.
This is the forth of my double-frame-rate DVD conversions. Since the original "Bareback Twink Orgy" DVD contained interlaced video, each field was unique, and was able to be converted, via an intelligent deinterlacer, into a complete frame, thus totally eliminating the "mice-teeth" design flaw defect of Interlaced Video. Any non-moving material maintains full original resolution, and only the moving portion of the picture are sourced from a single field, lines doubled. Since this DVD was NTSC, the resulting frame rate is 60 fps. The original source video was shot with excellent clarity and detail, and there is a fair amount of movement in this video, so the overall result of the double-frame-rate conversion is pretty impressive! I'm trying out a new sharpener filter in this release, described above, resulting in moderately sharpened edges, NO sharpened "noise" and a minimum file size impact.
The second row of pictures above demonstrates the effect. The left-hand picture shows the original frame, interlaced. Notice the mice-teeth defect along their arms and distorted hands. The middle picture illustrates the conversion of one field's data to one frame, via the intellegent deinterlacer, maintaining almost ALL of the original picture resolution, and the right-hand picture, from the actual finished video shows the improvement. You can see that the mice-teeth defects are gone, and their arms and hands are no longer distorted, and it's natural gay lovemaking, in it's original overwhelming beauty.
If you're unsure as to whether or not you can play 60 fps video in your computer (I can understand your hesitation!) I've included a short 60 fps test video in this torrent. You can download just this short video clip to test your player. Understand that the data-rate for this video is less than a DVD, and pretty much the same as any other High Quality conversion. If you've been able to play any other of my conversions, I really doubt you'll have any problems playing this video, on VLC or WMP. Note that this is NOT like the high (troublesome) excessive data-rates you experience with Blu-Ray movies. Download and test the little "60fps test.avi" file first, if you want to be sure!
If you're interested in learning more about double frame rates, there's a great write-up at double-u double-u double-u 100fps.com. This web site was my inspiration for these projects, in addition to the source of some of the procedures I employed.
While searching for a suitable DVD for the third project, I discovered that MANY, if not most of the great DVDs in my library had been processed and converted to "progressive" scan interlacing by the DVD manufacturer, utilizing the "blending" method of eliminating interlacing, prior to distribution. Unfortunately, this damages the video, permanently, softening the edges of ANYTHING with movement. This destructive process can NOT be reversed, by any method. Helix, my number two favorite studio, has committed this blending process to all of their DVDs, so I won't be able to convert ANY Helix material to double frame rate, sorry to say.
On a happier note, I'm hoping that the rest of the OTB DVD library is interlaced like this DVD, so I can continue to convert quality(!) (IMHO) DVD videos to this level of enhanced quality.
Here's the scoop the actual "Bareback Twink Orgy" conversion:
This is a fresh DVD conversion, created from the original DVD files.
First the DVD video data files were joined, then converted to an uncompressed 30fps format, creating a 191G file. The raw uncompressed slide shows took up another 18G.
Secondly, these uncompressed video fields were converted, via an intellegent deinterlacer, to uncompressed frames at 60fps, creating a 384G file for the main movie, and 34G for the slideshows.
Thirdly, these frames were analyzed, (using the first pass of the two-pass Xvid codec) to log the amount of picture detail and movement, frame by frame.
Fourthly, the video was reencoded, using the Xvid codec second pass mode, utilizing Variable Bit Rate Compression, (using the detail and motion data from the first Xvid pass,) for the most efficient Video Compression possible, while achieving a consistently crisp appearance to the human eye. Since the original source video detail and clarity was a little fuzzy, I chose to enhance the video, at this stage, with a moderate degree of "sharpening", utilizing the new M-Sharpen filter (see above).
I chose not to color-correct this video, since it looked pretty good, in it's original state. Cobra Video Studios usually creates a reasonable quality product, as in this case... considered amateur production, I think it's fair to say.
Lastly, the audio was converted to MP3 format, and resynced with the video again, resulting in the most reasonable file size possible, considering the quality.
All in all, I think all these processes tied up about 65 hours of computer time, since it took me 6 tries to get it right, taking about 9 days free-time to complete.
This video has a Gspot Qf (Quality Factor) of .196
With the elimination of interlacing artifacts via intellegent deinterlacing, and improved picture clarity (due to the new M-Sharpen filter, resulting in a reduced file size), I think, in all respects, this video looks BETTER than the original DVD, at 1/3 the size. Enjoy!
