OTB is a rare studio, producing top quality videos in a small niche market of VERY CUTE BAREBACK LATINO TWINKS. In order to prevent the eventual demise of studios like OTB, due to our file "sharing" here, we ought to actively support them, by at least occasionally actually BUYING their products. OK? No income from paying customers, no amazing OTB videos, in the future. Myself, I actually reside in a small third-world country where this is impossible, (NO porn stores, no poppers, no Viagra, and not even vibrators!!) so I don't really have the option to buy. But if the same is not true for you, and you can afford it... please DO support OTB!
Now then, the background of how this video (rescue project) came to be:
A friend of mine purchased the most recent OTB video, "True Friends Cum Outside", which we had both been eagerly awaiting, for months. He then posted a DVD rip of same... which I downloaded. I was frankly very surprised by the POOR quality (in the first scene especially,) considering it was a big size file (indicating a decent video bit rate), and my friend's videos are usually of excellent quality! So we got to talking about this... and he expressed his mutual puzzlement over this video too! He said that when he watched the DVD on his computer, it looked really "bad" but when he watched it on his TV, it looked pretty good! He was frustrated, because he WANTED to be able to watch it on his computer, sometimes, not just his TV.
Now he knew that I had been a video engineer, in the post production business, in Hollywood, for some 20+ years, and he knew I'd recently come up to speed on manipulating VirtualDubMod, with some great results. So he asked me to look at the DVD, and see if I could resolve the issue; IE create a processed DVD rip, in .avi format, that was "watchable" on a computer too, not just a TV. I jumped at the opportunity, partly for the intellectual challenge, and partly because I wanted the same thing, being a huge fan of OTB. So I got the DVD files from him, and started analyzing the "problem".
What I found was the it appears the single camera used for shooting scenes 1 and 4 was out of color alignment during the shoot(!), that is, the red and blue sensors were misaligned with the green, thus objects have a red halo on the right side, and a blue halo on the left side. This is a disastrous situation, when you have scenes with a LOT of picture detail, and scenes shot outdoors in wooded areas are the worst case scenario for picture detail needing to be flawless.
Imagine a small rock in the background. In a misaligned camera, it appears on the left as a blue rock, in the middle as green rock, and on the right as a red rock. But since the green rock in the middle is responsible for providing most (59%) of the luminance component (the black and white image of the rock), we can only see a faint image of left blue rock and the right red rock, and the fuzzy in-between greenish rock; we're left with a confusing fuzzy image. So... the bottom-line effect of this misalignment, is that the picture DETAIL, that is, the leaves, rocks, stones, sand, etc of this nature setting is fuzzy and appears as though out of focus.
It seems then, that in post-production, an attempt was made to try and rescue the video. The (high frequency) detail components of the picture were boosted a LOT, trying to somehow SHARPEN this softened misaligned video. Unfortunately, the detail got enhanced to such a degree that the background "noise", (present in ANY video image, but usually invisible to the human eye) began to take on a life of its own, "sizzling", shimmering, taking on patterns, movement and motion of its own.
And, then, as if this wasn't enough, as an odd side effect of this phenomenon, the scenes with the "sizzling" background noise became VERY Bit-hungry, which had the ironic effect of (stealing the data bits necessary to resolve the models clearly, thus) actually softening the appearance of the MODELS, a little bit MORE, during the final data compression, to DVD.
But, due to the resolution limitations of normal televisions, viewing this DVD on a TV showed none of this "sizzling" background. It's only when played on a computer, and viewed on a high resolution LCD display, that the noise problems become apparent.
Now for the upside:
The best news about this DVD was that there were three scenes which were absolutely flawless... frankly, STUNNING (Scenes 2, 3 and 5). In fact, the resolution of 720H x 480V was able to pack in a LOT of stunning picture detail of the outdoors, and these gorgeous boys... So no problem there.
And the other good news was that the processes I had to use to convert this DVD to an .AVI file (first converting the .VOB files to low-compression MPEG-4 format files, then deinterlacing, then encoding in two pass Xvid format, while dropping the video bit rate to lower than original levels to achieve reasonable file size) pretty much reduced the visible "sizzling" noise to near-invisible levels, without taking a negative toll on the look and detail in the models' images. Thus, scenes 1 and 4 were "rescued", in a manner of speaking.
I experimented with 8 different methods and different data rates, before arriving at this final best-case solution, that I share with you. I think it looks fantastic, (on BOTH a computer OR TV) and I really hope you enjoy it!
Again, PLEASE support OTB; buy a product directly from them, OK? I'd hate to never be able to see another new OTB release, in the future.
This video has a Gspot Qf (Quality Factor) of .232 for near-DVD quality.
Naturally, if you can afford to award any bonus points in appreciation of the work I put into this project, it would be greatly appreciated. It's a challenge to keep the Upload/Download ratio in the black, when downloading DVDs, to create these High Quality Xvid videos to share with you. Being able to trade in some bonus points for upload credit improves this ratio, and is a big help!
